Katherine Kelley Powell collection, circa 1850-1984 (bulk: 1909-1984).

The Katherine Kelley Powell collection contains a variety of genealogical research materials, correspondence, clippings, and photographs created by Kelley, her father Elmer E. Kelley, the Powell family, and other Kelley family members. A significant portion of the correspondence is between E.E. Kelley and Katherine, discussing daily life and family matters. Also included is correspondence and research notes of Mellie Thatcher concerning Thatcher genealogy, similar records for the Kiggins family of Kentucky, and published stories of E.E. Kelley. The bulk of the records date between 1909-1984, while the collection also includes photocopied reproductions of letters dating as far back as the 1850s.

The Kelley family of Kansas was primarily based out of Garden City, Finney County, Kansas. Katherine Kelley Powell was the daughter of popular newspaper columnist Elmer E. Kelley, who died on January 31, 1940. Elmer E. Kelley was born on September 13, 1861 in Indiana. His family moved to Toronto, Kansas in 1887 where he became a school principal. Kelley purchased the Toronto Republican in 1910, and added the Garden City Herald in 1924. He became president of the Kansas Press Association in 1914....
